Dear eCompetence and eLearning actors, One of the main purposes of the Bologna - Process is to change control measures for developing higher education learning from input to output orientation. This change is also relevant for the concepts of teaching and learning in universities. The focus of curriculum development is gradually shifting towards learning outcomes. In present, the learning outcomes are not made explicit in terms of traditional learning objectives. But slowly, competence profiles are replacing more and more a body of knowledge, which means that the learning outcomes are defined in a more complex way. The learning outcomes do not only contain knowledge, but also incorporate skills, motivation and attitudes, which enable an individual to act in complex situations in a responsible and suitable way. This is the wider thematic context in which the concept of eCompetence is discussed within our project framework. In this edition, Christina McDonald Legg from Galway will discuss ways that the project will be disseminated to the public. Please have a look inside! The focus in the events section is on the Barcelona Symposium, which took place September 22-23 and was hosted by our colleagues from the UAB - Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona in Spain. Christina outlines the main strings of discussion that developed around the conceptual approach towards eCompetence as the core challenge of the Symposium. In the eCompetence insights section, Miguel Arjona from Altran SDB in Madrid presents an approach for applying the CRM concept in the area of eLearning in higher education. Sjoerd de Vries and Joachim Wetterling from the University of Twente outline in their contribution the role that communities of practice can play for the development of eCompetences for academic staff. As usual, we have included two reviews on eLearning publications that our Swiss partners SCIL have published in their elearning-reviews platform. In this edition the reviews focus on a change management model for building and integrating a learning environment architecture into the university and the role that the modern information technology plays in the area of higher education. Finally Dirk Schneckenberg gives a short foresight on the final eCompetence Symposium, which will be embedded into the International Conference of the AHD - the German Association for Research and Development in Higher Education. The title of the Conference is "The Changing Teaching and Learning Culture in Higher Education" and the presentation of results of the eCompetence Initiative will take place in several Conference panels. AHD ANNUAL CONGRESS 2006: CHANGE IN TEACHING AND LEARNING CULTURES AT UNIVERSITIES - RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION IN AN INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE by Dirk Schneckenberg, University of Dortmund On behalf of the AHD - the German Association for Research and Development in Higher Education, in cooperation with the HDZ - the Center for Research on Higher Education and Faculty Development of the University of Dortmund and the European eCompetence Initiative, we are delighted to invite you to attend the Annual 2006 conference with the topic "The changing teaching and learning Culture in Higher Education". As already announced in Barcelona, the final project symposium of the eCompetence Initiative will be embedded in the wider framework of this event. The AHD 2006 conference will take place at the University of Dortmund from Monday 6th to Thursday 9th March 2006. We expect between two and three hundred German and International actors and practitioners, researchers and advisors on the Bologna Process and staff development in higher education. These experts will form a delegate community that will help to provide a forum for discussing the fundamental change that is evolving due to the Bologna Process and the construction of a European higher education area in university teaching and learning. The AHD 2006 conference will include keynote addresses from German and international experts, presentations on national and international best practice, collaborative workshop activity and interactive debate. The event promises to be a challenging and professionally rewarding experience for delegates. Invitations have been issued to those whose knowledge and direct experience of the current change processes in higher education can most greatly contribute to the conference content and to fulfilling the desired outcomes of the event.
